is PPR? |

Peste des petits
ruminants (PPR) is a highly contagious and infectious
viral disease of domestic and wild small ruminants.
Cause
Influenza like virus.
Economic impact
Presence of disease can limit:-
• Trade and export.
• Import of new breeds.
• Development of Intensive livestock production.
• Loss of animal protein for human consumption.
Transmission
Close contact around watering places, markets and
grazing lands.
Virus present in tears, saliva and faeces.
Spreads fast in non endemic areas.
Clinical signs
1. Incubation period 3 to 10 days.
2. Sudden onset of depression.
3. High temperature and does not eat.
4. Discharges from the eyes and nose.
5. Upper respiratory discharge progressing to catarrhal
exudates.
6. Disturbed breathing and cough.
7. Wounds in the mouth.
8. Foul-smelling diarrhea and death.
Post mortem signs
1. Affected lungs like liver, dark red or purple.
2. Wounds on the mouth.
3. Bloody spots in the intestines.
4. Carcass of an affected animal is usually thin.
5. The hindquarters soiled with soft/watery faeces
and the eyeballs sunken.
Diagnosis
Laboratory diagnosis and from clinical signs by veterinarian.
Treatment
No specific treatment.
Drugs to control bacterial and parasitic complications
may decrease mortality.
Supportive care.
Prevention
Consult a veterinary professional.
Stop movement of animals (Quarantine).
